A LOVE POTION
Chocolate, otherwise called the 'love drug', is derived from the Cacao tree. As soon as you eat chocolate, the brain releases a "feel-good" chemical called dopamine.
In addition to dopamine, chocolate also contains a powerful compound called phenethlyamine (PEA) - the chemical responsible for prompting your nervous system to unleash endorphins.
You put these three altogether, and it's pure magic. All of a sudden, your levels of serotonin are higher and you're happier, more energetic and feeling pretty awesome.
TWO POWER PLAYERS
But that's not all. To better explain the relationship between "love" and chocolate, we need to be aware of caffeine and theobromine. You might consider these two as having quite the chemical bromance, as interdependent of one another. Both stimulate your central nervous system, and together, are the two major power players behind elevating your mood.
BETTER THAN THE REAL DEAL?
A recent study conducted at Cambridge University suggests that chocolate, may very well be, just as good as the real thing. Dr Adrian Owen, a neuroscientist at the University, concluded "it seems chocolate has a unique blend of sensory qualities which make us feel good, activating pleasure centres in the brain".
IT'S ACTUALLY AWESOME
The main ingredient in chocolate is cocoa, which contains a large amount of antioxidant polyphenols. These polyphenols work to lower cholesterol and to prevent blocked arteries, thus improving an individual's cardiovascular health.
But this remarkable health benefit is not provided from the sugar-filled variety. Keeping in mind, the higher the cacao content (think dark chocolate) - the better the chocolate is for you.
It's delicious, divine and delectable. Need we say more?
